Dance Manager Training

UKFD’s Dance Manager Training is suspended, effective 2004, given a shift in Arts Council England priorities and strategies.

UKFD regrets that Dance Manager Training is not financially viable at present.

UKFD has played a significant role in the funded training of Independent Dance Managers (IDMs), initially in 1999 as partner in the London Arts funded Independance agency (eg Isabel Tamen, Farooq Chaudhry, who have gone on to manage/produce, with huge success, respectively, Akram Khan and Henri Oguike dance companies), and on its own, with Arts Council England funding, 2001-2004 (e.g. Kerry Andrews). Other short-term training, advice sessions, consultancies, seminars and placements have been given.

UKFD’s Director, Tim Tubbs, has played a leading role in the formation of the Independent Dance Managers Network (IDMN), which he chaired until 2005, and in which UKFD continues to play an active role.

There is a clear need for such training, given a perceived shortage of experienced and available dance managers, acknowledged by the Arts Council’s Independent Dance Management Review (2002).

U
KFD’s preferred model is to offer fully-planned, salaried two-year traineeships for suitable individuals, providing a planned, effective and (ideally) accredited two-year training programme at Marylebone Dance Studio. The programme drew on the experience gained through IDMN and Independance 1999-2003, based on models of good practice emerging through IDMN. Training was a mixture of hands-on, in-post practical training, combined with a more formal study programme, involving mentoring, shared seminar or training sessions and placements outside UKFD, as appropriate.

UKFD continues to play an active role in discussion, lobbying and mutual support through IDMN. Meanwhile, placements continue to be available by arrangement, taken seriously, planned and delivered against pre-agreed outcomes.

Recent placements, in partnership with City University, Arts Council England, LAF and The Brit School, and have included: Jacqueline Greaves, Erin Pellecchia (2004), Kitsy Niaty, Channelle White (2006) and Maria Geithner (2007).
